Arts and Culture on Prescription:
the first clinical study in Switzerland

"Arts and Culture on Medical Prescription. The impact of cultural prescribing on the health of the older population living in Lugano" is a clinical study exploring the positive impact of artistic and cultural activities on the health and well-being of people over 65.
Painting, photography, music, dance, theatre and museum therapy become part of a structured, personalised programme. Each participant is supported in choosing the activities best suited to their interests and needs, with the aim of observing possible effects on well-being, quality of life and social connection.

The study phases
With the involvement of local family doctors, people over 65 living in the Municipality of Lugano with chronic lifestyle-related conditions were selected.
Each participant was paired with a link worker, a trained professional who helped them choose the cultural activity best matching their interests, sensibilities and needs.
For six months, weekly sessions were held in disciplines such as painting, photography, music, dance, theatre and museum therapy, led by specialised cultural mediators trained for the project, in collaboration with LAC Edu.
Throughout the programme, data were collected through questionnaires, clinical assessments and smartwatches to monitor changes in mental health, well-being, physiological parameters and quality of life. In parallel, a qualitative sub-study gathered the experiences of participants, doctors and practitioners through dedicated interviews.
The study is now in its final phase. The data collected are being analysed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of cultural prescribing and to explore the possible role of artistic and cultural activities in health pathways. The results will be shared at the end of the study.
-
Selezione

The study in numbers
80 involved in the cultural activities and 20 in the control group.
The total observation period for each participant.
One weekly appointment with artistic and cultural activities.
At the start of the study, after 6 months and after 12 months.
The research team
The study's principal investigator is Prof. Dr. med. Luca Gabutti, who leads the research team at the Ospedale Italiano di Lugano and Università della Svizzera italiana. The scientific committee also includes Marta Fadda, Nicola Grignoli, Serena Petrocchi and Martina Zandonà for USI, Silvia Misiti for IBSA Foundation, and Luigi Di Corato for the City of Lugano.
From experimentation to a possible new model of care
The study does not only aim to observe the effects of cultural activities on individual participants. It also seeks to understand whether cultural prescribing could become a realistic, acceptable and replicable model, capable of connecting family medicine, research, culture and the local community.
The results may help build new scientific evidence and inform the debate on integrating culture into future cantonal and federal health policies.
The project partners
This project is the result of a collaboration between the Institute of Family Medicine at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), IBSA Foundation for scientific research, the Culture Division of the City of Lugano and the LAC – Lugano Arte e Cultura cultural centre.
Each partner contributes specific expertise and resources: the Institute of Family Medicine brings solid experience in community health and research methodology; IBSA Foundation supports the link between scientific research and social well-being; the Culture Division ensures the integration of local cultural heritage and community involvement; LAC provides advisory support and a broad, diverse cultural repertoire, both essential for tailor-made interventions.
In-depth articles
How does cultural prescribing work, and what scientific evidence supports it?
In recent years, international research has increasingly explored the relationship between cultural participation, social relationships and health. These in-depth articles bring together studies, experiences and perspectives that help explain the scientific context of the Lugano pilot project.
